From ideas to AI solutions #2 – Agentic Development Hackathon at Copernicus

Over two intense days, the Copernicus team, alongside participants from Raiffeisen Tech Poland and Head Office Vienna, came together for the Agentic Development Hackathon — a unique blend of AI innovation, hands-on experimentation, and cross-location teamwork. This event was more than just a sprint. It was a crucial step in discovering how agentic AI development can be harnessed within a complex, legacy system to streamline daily workflows and speed up real-world software delivery.

Because at Raiffeisen Tech, hackathons aren’t mere one-off competitions or gamified exercises. They are an integral part of our continuous development journey — a dedicated space where learning meets real-world application, and AI use cases become part of everyday work.

Collaboration in Action

Four diverse teams, each bringing together business analysts, backend and frontend developers, and testers, dove into two practical challenges: cloning existing CRM Opportunities to create new ones, and managing reusable report templates. Use cases were assigned randomly at kickoff, pushing teams to quickly align and innovate. Midway through, teams synchronized their progress, sharing insights and planning next steps. The journey culminated in a live demo session, with the Business Owner joining remotely to witness the tangible results. Guided by experienced mentors, teams continuously validated AI-generated outputs, refining features in real time.

Tackling Real Challenges

The hackathon’s core mission was clear: empower participants to apply agentic development directly on the Copernicus codebase and uncover where this approach thrives or struggles within a governed, brownfield system. Which parts can be safely operationalized? Where do limitations arise?

The two use cases brought these questions to life. The Opportunity cloning feature addressed a common pain point — the tedious and error-prone task of manually re-entering data for similar deals. By enabling users to pre-fill new opportunities with existing data, it promised significant time savings and fewer mistakes. Meanwhile, the report template management feature focused on boosting efficiency by allowing users to save, edit, and share named report views within their access area, clearly distinguishing between protected default views and user-created custom ones.

All teams successfully met the Definition of Done, completing requirements analysis, test case preparation, development, and automated testing — delivering solutions ready for real-world impact.

Cloning an existing opportunity to create a new one

Opportunity cloning addresses the time-consuming and error-prone process of manually re-entering data when creating similar sales opportunities by enabling users to pre-fill a new opportunity with data from an existing one.

Managing To-do report templates

Report template management improves workflow efficiency by allowing users to save, edit, and share custom report view configurations within their access area, distinguishing between protected default views and user-created custom views.

Key Insights and Lessons Learned

This hackathon reaffirmed AI’s role as a powerful assistant rather than a standalone autopilot. Human oversight remained essential — from verifying requirements to reviewing code. Careful planning before engaging AI tools proved vital for success. Beyond technology, the event highlighted the strength of collaboration, as teams integrated diverse expertise and shifted their mindset from “Does AI work?” to “Where and how can AI be safely and profitably applied in legacy systems?”

Looking Ahead

The solutions crafted during these two days are set to enter the next release cycle, soon benefiting end-users and advancing Copernicus’s AI readiness. This experience lays the groundwork for future deployments of agentic development, guiding how we safely integrate AI into our daily workflows.
