Workation – how we combine work with leisure

You wrap up a call, send your last email. You finish work, and right away, you're greeted by the sound of the sea, a warm breeze, and sunlight filtering through a beach umbrella. Does this sound like a memory from your last vacation? At first glance, yes, but for our employees, it’s something more, as they can take advantage of an additional benefit in the form of a workation.

What is a workation?

Workation is an increasingly popular form of work that allows employees to carry out their professional duties from any location within the European Union while simultaneously enjoying the perks of travel and relaxation. The idea is that work doesn’t need to be confined to the office and can be effectively done in a chosen environment. This encourages relaxation and stimulates creativity.
At Raiffeisen Tech, we offer our employees the opportunity to work remotely for 30 days from any location in the European Union. This shows that work-life balance isn’t just a theory here but a practice! Additionally, each of our employees can take advantage of our sabbatical program, offering one, two, or even three months off work – more details to come soon.

  • What made you take advantage of workation?
Bulgaria had long been on my travel bucket list. Since I collect traditional Bulgarian ceramics, I dreamed of visiting and experiencing the country. The idea for a workation came about quite spontaneously. Bulgaria was the plan for my honeymoon. My husband and I thought that a week-long vacation didn't have to be the end, and that our trip could last a bit longer.
  • Was it difficult to balance work and relaxation in a new place?
At first, I had some concerns about whether I could work effectively in a new environment. I'm quite particular about my workspace and conditions. But it quickly turned out that proper day planning allows for a successful combination of work and relaxation. Flexibility in remote work was key – I could adjust my working hours to fit my daily schedule, which made balancing work and leisure much easier.
  • What are the biggest benefits of workation for you?
I found that where there's a will, there's a way. The change of scenery boosted my creativity and motivation to work. I can’t overlook the improvement in my overall well-being either. Although the weather in Poland at this time of year is usually nice, in Bulgaria, I could count on a daily dose of sunshine and relaxation, which I really needed. Additionally, discovering a new culture and cuisine was a valuable experience. I returned to Poland full of energy and ready for new challenges.

  • What was your typical day like during workation?
I would wake up after 8 a.m. to have time for coffee before my morning meeting. Around 1 p.m., I’d take a short break for a snack, catch some sun, and go for a swim in the pool. Then I’d return to work. Given the flexible working hours, I sometimes worked in the evenings to make up for a midday diving trip.
  • Was it hard to balance work and leisure in a new place?
No, it was actually quite simple for me. Even lunchtime aligned perfectly with the end of my workday, so I could easily enjoy local restaurants.
  • What are the biggest benefits of workation for you?
The ability to change environments and do things after work that aren’t available in Warsaw, like water sports and diving. I could step outside, catch some sun, swim in the pool, and overall enjoy a beautiful view while working.

  • What are the biggest benefits of workation for you?
A nice view from the window while working increased my motivation. On a personal level, I love to explore countries in a way that lets me truly experience their culture. That takes time, and workation gives that time by significantly extending the trip.
  • Did workation affect your approach to work and professional life after returning?
Yes, definitely for the better. A change of scenery makes a person feel refreshed and more engaged, which positively impacts their work approach. Returning is also a change, and after a few weeks of getting used to a new place, the effect is again positive.

  • What motivated you to take a workation?
I think it won’t surprise anyone when I say cycling – practically every workation trip I’ve taken has been combined with the opportunity to ride my bike. I especially enjoy these trips when the weather in Poland isn't great, making outdoor cycling difficult. Then, a cycling workation in Spain recharges my batteries twice over.
  •  Was it difficult to balance work and relaxation in a new place?
Not at all – working from a different location than usual, I’m more motivated to finish tasks quickly so as not to extend my work hours. Working by the pool on a lounge chair isn’t the best idea, though – it's hot, uncomfortable, and the sun can be blinding. It’s worth separating time for work and rest. On trips, it’s easier for me to switch from work mode to relaxation mode because I don't have household distractions around me.
  • Did workation affect your approach to work and professional life after returning?
For me, workation is a chance to clear my head. The change in surroundings, weather, and the people around me brings a breath of fresh air. Going to the local shop for morning bread and walking through unfamiliar streets pushes me out of my routine and stimulates creative thinking.
